Most beginning guitar players start with a rather inexpensive instrument. They usually have a mass production clone of a Fender Stratocaster or a Gibson Les Paul. The most popular clones are made overseas by Gibson and Fender themselves through the Epiphone and Squier lines. These are built to the same specs as the American made models. They are decent instruments in their own right but they can be improved greatly with just a pickup replacement. As long as the neck is straight and the tuning pegs are fairly tight, this is often all you need to upgrade to a pro sound.

Iv'e modified several Mexican made Stratocasters and I'll take you through the process. The first thing you want to decide on is what kind of sound you're looking for. Replacement pickups are available with a lot of variety in sound output. I like to use Seymour Duncan pickups because they have proven to be of high quality and reliability. They also have a good selection and have a CD of sound samples you can listen to. Most dealers have the CD's and you can also listen to the samples online. Choose your replacement pickups and you're ready to upgrade.

You'll need several things for the job. A good stable workbench or table, with plenty of room to lay your tools out, makes things much easier. Here's a list of what you need:

1.screwdriver set, both flat head and philips

2.soldering iron

3.solder

4.new set of strings

5.wire cutters/strippers

The first thing you need to do is remove your guitar strings. I usually leave the low E-string on to keep a little tension on the neck. Next remove the pickguard cover. Make sure you save all the screws in a cup as they are small and get lost easily. After you remove the screws you should be able to lift up on it and slide it off under the E-string. You should now see your three pickups and the wiring thats attached to them.

The new pickups come with a wiring diagram that is color coded but take a good look at each pickup before you replace it in case something isn't quite right with the color code. It's important that you replace one pickup at a time so as not to mix up the bridge, middle and neck pickups.

Heat up your soldering iron. Remove the first pickup. I usually start with the neck pickup. Cut and strip the wires according to the instructions and solder the wires to the new ones. Repeat the process for the other two. Not too bad, huh?

When you replace the cover/pickguard, be careful not to overtighten the screws or they might get stripped. Now would be a good time to clean the guitar before you put the new strings on.

Replace and tune the strings and plug in. You'll be pleased with the results. I have several of these upgraded strats for the price of one expensive one and more versatilty with different pickup sounds. You can do the same thing with an Epiphone Les Paul to produce a sound that rivals the Gibson for about a third of the price. Now you can spend more money on all the cool effects gadgets. Have fun and keep practicing.

Everything!

Customer Review: Good stuff
Everything I had hoped for from the Tones and more. Makes you miss the halcyon days in which this lively and innovative music was made. A great job of packaging too - a really solid collection including the pop stuff and the fun oddities.
Customer Review: One of the greatest ever
As much as I love music and all it has to offer, nothing has ever struck and stuck with me like TOT. I owned the POP album on vinyl, and I played it time and time again. Absolutely brilliant! I adore Love and Rockets, and I think Bauhaus are OK (a bit overrated), but this was a true gem. You absolutely must listen to "Rain". Greatest song ever composed in my opinion. I can't stress enough how wonderful this song is. It opens up with ambient organ and guitar (which is e-bowed, a method used throughout their songs), and then it morphs brilliantly into the singing and structure. Lyrically it is stunning, and I tell you the music will just stick with you. Just a beautiful song!

Named after their hometown, the soft rock outfit, Boston has a loyal core of fans. Boston the band was in its prime during the 1970s and 1980s but they have never really gone away. They are a particular favorite with radio DJs and their appeal cuts across the generations. The most famous song associated with them is probably More Than a Feeling.

As with most groups that have been around for a long time, there have been several changes to the line up. The only remaining original member is Tom Scholz and he founded the band Boston, plays on guitar and writes most of the music. Current members also include Gary Pihl on guitar, Jeff Neal on drums and Kimberley Dahme on bass. Dahme is the first female member of the line up. Scholz is also well known for his innovation in the recording studio and has designed his own recording and sound equipment. He is a perfectionist in the studio and strive to reproduce the best sound possible on stage.

The group has a habit of making platinum albums, including the debut from 1976. Called Boston, the album sold more copies than any other debuts in American history. The follow up, two years later, Don't Look Back, also reached platinum sales, as did the next two. Third Stage was released in 1986 and Walk On in 1994. A Greatest Hits release was another bestseller in 1997. In addition to the old hits, it contained three new songs. The latest album from Boston the band is Corporate America, which came out in 2002.

The single, More Than a Feeling, from the debut album, reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was promoted with a video of the group in concert. The song has been covered several times including a version by boy band *NSYNC. "Weird Al'' Yankovic has also done a parody of the song. It is featured on the PlayStation game, Guitar Hero.

There was a very emotional reunion for Boston the band in 2007 when Tom Scholz organized a tribute concert to former vocalist with the group, the late Brad Delp. Both current and past members of the band came together to celebrate Delp's life, playing their classic hit records. The concert, at Boston's Bank of America Pavilion, was a great success. Despite the circumstances, it was an uplifting affair for the band and their fans as they remembered the vast contribution that Delp had made to the band's success.

Fender Standard Stratocaster Pickguard - Black Pearl - For 2 Humbucking and 1 Single-Coil Pickups

Guitar Replacement Pickguard. Made by Fender.

One of the really nice things about Fender instruments is that you can change the look of your instrument with relative ease.

One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is to replace the pickguard! Fender offers a variety of pickguards with different pickup configurations and materials to help you add a personal touch to your favorite Fender instrument. This 4-Ply, 11 Hole Pickguard, is for 2-Humbucking and 1 single coil pickups.

Fits:

  • American, American Standard, Hot Rod and Deluxe Series Stratocasters, (also Big Apple / Double Fat Strat) (USA)
  • Standard, Deluxe and '70s Stratocasters (Mexico)

Ok so you play guitar or are looking to learn.but which guitar do you buy? Its a question that guitarists the world over ponder time and time again.

Sure theres the ever greens such as the Fender Stratocaster or the Gibson Les Paul and their inexpensive copies. But thats a well trodden path what you want is a little character a little something that makes you stand out what you want is a hollow body semi acoustic.

Why a semi acoustic?

Ok for starters a Semi Acoustic looks the business. Take a look at a Gibson 335 with its smooth double cut away design and its elegant curves. When you step on the stage with a semi acoustic people notice. Take a look at a Strat or a Les Paul then take a look at a Semi theres a stark difference first off, semis are big but more importantly they are much lighter than their solidbody, comfortable to play and pack a punch in the sound department.

Their sound

Coupled with its looks hollow-bodies have a great range of tone and musical capability. From the Epiphone Casinos beautiful Jazzy tone to the Epiphone Wildkat that packs a rockabilly punch theirs a broad range of tones that can be generated. Hollow bodies traditionally come with two Humbucker pickups. Typically the bridge pickup can produce some great rock and roll tones whilst the neck pickups are great for jazzy Charlie Christian licks.

Their price

Although for a fully fledged Gibson 335 you may need several thousand dollars, these days there are a variety of budget alternative hollow body guitars. For example Epiphone make the Epiphone Wildkat which features a Bigsby style tremolo system for around $500. Other manufacturers such as Vintage and Ibanez all produce very good imitations of their more expensive counterparts at a much reduced price. If you shop around youll surprised at what you can afford.

Versatility

Hollow bodies are extremely versatile and lend themselves to a wide range of musical styles for example - Chuck Berry style Rock and Roll (Gibson 335), BB King style Blues (Gibson 335), Chet Atkins Country (Gretch Country Gent), Alt-Rock Noel Gallagher (Epiphone Sheraton) and finally 60s Pop (John Lennon Epiphone Casino) semis lend themselves to a range of musical styles.

Their tradition.

Hollow body guitars were some of the first electric guitars manufactured. Epiphone were making adjustable pole pickup semi acoustic guitars in the 1930s so they have a long and proud history.

So the next time your thinking of getting a new guitar sure a Stratocaster is nice and a Les Paul has finesse but if you want a great guitar, with great looks sound and versatility look no further than the hollow-body semi acoustic guitars at your local store.

Stratocaster Greats: Playing in the Style of Fender

Customer Review: History of the Fender Guitar
This is not really an instructinal DVD it is more of a history lesson about the Fender Stratocaster Guitar and its rise from the early 50's to today. Tom Kolb explains such mundane things as the Bridge section of the guitar and control knobs, tremelo,pickup's...ect.But the highlite is when he plays in different styles such as Jeff beck, Eric Clapton,Ritche Blackmore, and other great Strat players.Fun to watch if you are a huge Strat fan like me... but may bore others who were hopping to glean some riff's off of this DVD. After watching this dvd you do realize just how important the Strat has been to Rock and music in general. Its the only true example i can think of where they got something right the first time! the body and structure of the Srtat has not changed in 60 years....thats beacause it was perfect to begin with.
Customer Review: Don't waste your cash
I've played keyboard for over 25 years. I've now decided to start playing guitar and purchased this video. No doubt that Tom Kolb knows how to play a guitar. If I didn't have any previous musical knowledge I would have been completely lost watching this DVD. What it shows to you is a bunch of information about various styles of various guitar players. That's what it is suppose to do right? Well what is shown to you is a guy playing his guitar really fast and talks about nothing on how to apply techniques and use them. Then you are referred to look at a cheezy photocopied handbook that is suppose to explain everything. Wrong! Every "technique" that is shown... if you can pick it out during his fast playing... would already be known by an experienced player. Beginner.... forget it, you won't see anything that will help you. I could go on for hours on how useless this video is. But I'll keep it short. Spend your money on something else.

David Gilmour, like his Pink Floyd predecessor Syd Barrett, played a Telecaster initially, but he soon became one of the first British rock guitar legends to favor the Fender Stratocaster and to create a signature sound with the instrument. His parents bought the Tele for Davids 21st birthday, and he played it for a year (including on the Saucerful of Secrets record) until it was lost by an airline.

Upon officially joining Pink Floyd, Gilmour purchased a custom Stratocaster (the first of many) at a Cambridge music store. During the early Pink Floyd years, Gilmour played a Strat almost exclusively, taking full advantage of its wide tonal palette and vibrato bar in his style. He used a Lewis 24-fret electric guitar on rare occasions for its extended range, as in the solo of Money, and continued to employ a Tele sporadically in the repertory. Gilmour strung his electric guitars with Gibson Sonomatic strings made of a customized light-top (using the standard E and B for the B and G) and heavy-bottom set gauged .010, .012, .016, .028, .038, and .050. He used a Herco heavy-gauge pick.

David Gilmours earliest amp setup with Pink Floyd consisted of a Selmer 50-watt head with a 412 speaker cabinet. By 1970, he found his signature sound with a stack made of Hiwatt 100-watt heads with WEM 412 cabinets. The Hiwatt/WEM combination can be heard conspicuously on Meddle and Dark Side of the Moon. In the studio, he sometimes added a Fender Twin Reverb combo amp with two 12-inch speakers to his lineup for certain parts, as on Dark Side of the Moon.

David Gilmours early Floyd effects consisted of a Binson Echorec tape delay (like Barrett, he used this device from his first days with the band), a Dallas-Arbiter Fuzzface fuzz box, Uni-Vibe pedal, Vox wah-wah pedal, a DeArmond volume pedal, and Leslie and Yamaha RA-200 rotating speaker cabinets. The latter were routed through the output sections of Hiwatt heads and then to WEM 412 cabinets. In 1972, his effects boxes were mounted in a custom cabinet, and his array of processors grew to include a second Binson Echorec and a second Fuzzface, an MXR Phase 90, a Crybaby wah-wah, an Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress flanger, Big Muff fuzz, an Orange treble and bass booster, and a custom-built tone pedal.

Additionally, Gilmour used studio effects like ADT (Automatic Double Tracking, a favorite studio processor first developed at Abbey Road Studios for the Beatles), Kepex for tremolo, various tape effects, studio echo chambers, and backwards guitar. He also employed an EMS Synthi Hi-Fi guitar synthesizer (heard on Time on Dark Side of the Moon), and usually played a lap steel or Fender twin neck pedal steel guitar for slide parts. He used various acoustic guitars on early Floyd tracks, later settling on Martin D-18 and D-35 models in the 1970s, and, depending on the song, alternated between fingerpicking and playing with a plectrum.

Acoustic guitars use the hollow resonating chamber of the body of the guitar to amplify and resonate the sound of the strings being plucked, but on an electric guitar, this isn't the case. The body of an electric guitar is usually entirely solid, and the sound of the strings being struck is picked up by something called a pickup, which basically measures the amount of vibration of a particular string, and transmits this frequency to an amplifier. The amplifier then magnifies this frequency to create a sound which is not only audible, but also usually modified or distorted in some way to create the distinctive sound of an electric guitar. Without a pickup or an amplifier, the sound of an electric guitar is less than impressive, and is by no means merely a quieter version of what you would hear with an amplifier.

The pickups work by detecting the amount of vibration of a string, because the amount of vibration is directly equivalent to the frequency, and it is the frequency of a string's vibration that generates the note. By holding a string down against one of the frets on the fret board or neck of the guitar, the length of the string is reduced, and as a result, the string's natural vibration of frequency is changed, and this in turn affects the note. There are different types of pickup that work in slightly different ways, but the most commonly found variety is an electromagnet. The electromagnetic pickups are bundles of copper wire wound very tightly into a small coil, and these are then positioned right underneath the strings. When the string is struck, it moves, and this generates a very small electric field measurable in volts, and this voltage is the signal which is sent to the amplifier.

Effectively such electromagnetic pickups work in the same way as an electric generator. These coils of copper wires are either found as single coils or as doubles, with the advantage being that double coil pickups are less likely to pick up noise from other nearby electric fields. In the 1950s the double coil humbucker was developed, and this used two separate copper coils, with one placed in the opposite polarity of the other, and this effectively cancelled out any problem as far as stray electrical field noise was concerned. These double coil humbuckers do create a different sound and tone to the single coil pickups, generally considered to be a much heavier sound, whereas the single coil pickups are used by those players looking for a much brighter sound, and usually with a much broader range.

Today the style of pickup is generally tailored to suit the type of sound that the player wants to try to achieve, and the general rule of thumb is that the smaller the amount of copper wire used in the coil, the brighter the sound, whereas the more coils used, and the more wire used in the pickup, the heavier the overall sound will be. There are also sometimes options to have the coil wired for extra switching, so that effects can be achieved by altering the way the coil works, and thereby changing the sound of the note dynamically. These effects usually require the guitar to have battery power to achieve the changes.

Although double coil pickups are usually the maximum, there are exceptions, and the Fender Stratocaster is one very well known example. The Fender Stratocaster actually uses three coil pickups, and this is what gives this particular model of guitar such a distinctive tone. In complete contrast, there are also piezoelectric pickups which use crystals positioned under each string, and when the string is struck, its vibrations very slightly alter the shape of the crystal. As the crystal changes shape, a very small voltage of electricity is produced, and by amplifying this, the sound is achieved.

Fender Stratocaster Keychain

Back in the days of what was the explosive Woodstock music scene of Bristol and the West Country, a vocalist emerged from the new genre, known as indie, in the shape Gerard Langley. Hardly, as you would first think, a name to be reckoned with in the glitzy world of music showbiz, but a fairly stable name even so. Along with his brother, who took up the position of drummer, they soon gathered together a collection of some of the most talented and composed musicians in the city area. In fact, they were, as they called themselves, The Blue Aeroplanes, known to have the biggest musician - participation in, probably, modern music history.

Although their commercial contribution to the world of music looks vaguely more successful that a Pop Idol winner, their gritty and uniquely timed anthems had far from been on the same level. Langley, the headman was known, in the fast growing indie scene for his deep, menacing and half spoken vocals and other than supporting a then, little known U.S band called, R.E.M, although the band had collaborated with Michelle Shocked on one track.

It would appear that there seems to be a silent, yet, growing interest in this distant indie band who, tragically, graced only the bottom half of the Top 75 at any given time. It perhaps should be more the question of why didnt they ever make the grade? Well, that could be answered as simply as bad timing. Due to their haunting renditions of a familiar Smiths sound, they would have been noted as to be almost a decade out of date. I do believe that if they had been around a lot earlier, then their level of success would have vastly improved. That comatose style of backing vocal, at the time of, Jacket Hangs was the tones of Rodney Allen, Alex Lee, John Langley and Andy McCreeth, was more along the lines of The Waterboys, which, is certainly no bad thing, but on listening back to Blue Aeroplanes tunes today, we find ourselves puzzled as to why they werent better recognised. What we dont perhaps remember, is how much the talent odds were stacked against them. With a sound that was unique and so in tune with the outside world, it was also the backdrop of every other band at the time. Not to mention the members list grew to around thirty...

It is also arguable that there were far less talented bands around the time of the mid Eighties to the early Nineties, who, simply didnt deserve to achieve the success that they did. Who really could have forgotten that rhythmic perfect of John Langleys drum backing and that non melodic, jangle effect on guitars from Lee and Allen? They fused together as a band and never failed to let their fan base down. They might have been predictable in their approach to their own expression of indie music, but at least that meant never having to cringe ferociously at surprising and embarrassing diversions.

Their first notably successful album, Bop Art, in April 1984, may have sounded more like a Gene Vincent take on an old Transvision Vamp album, but it was surprisingly fresh enough to create a lasting appeal on certain listeners who, it would seem, became the backbone of the circle of devoted fans today. Although, since their early days, when their influences swayed heavily towards Elvis Costello and The Velvet Underground, they have somehow taken what they had learnt from these artists and actually drawn up, by themselves, a sound that, truly, came from themselves. We wonder how it came to be that they had come and gone from so many record labels. Their career path has certainly trodden a steady route through all the alternative labels of that time. Finally, standing firm behind the legendary label that brought us Icicle Works and Gene Loves Jezebel - Beggars Banquet, they had driven the idea through following bands, that it was the way that stable, tight knitted bands worked to get the maximum coverage.

Albums followed plus a couple of singles that failed to make any lasting notability with the regular record purchaser. Tolerance in 1986 and Spitting Out Miracles in 1986, after which, they enjoyed little in the way of pleasing positions from a string of EPs and one or two singles that followed.

They did, however, change their attitude through this far from joyful period in their early career. Shifting from Art Rock and layered pieces to dirty, simple guitar rhythms and slapping drums, their move towards the indie scene seemed sensible and optimistic. Two singles followed through another label, Chrysalis, Jacket Hangs, and ..And Stones, first in February and second in May 1990. Both failed to cut into the Top 70. Albums trailed accordingly in the shape of Swagger, (1990), Beatsongs, (1991) and Life Model, (1994). The middle of these, Beatsongs, graced the Top 35, but failed to hang around longer than three weeks. They had, already, toured with R.E.M in 1989 by this time, who, were enjoying critical acclaim with their politically observed, Green, the year before.

They had achieved as much as they could in those early times. They appeared in such audience participating venues such as the Town And Country Club in Kentish Town, North London; a venue known for the closeness felt through band and crowd. It was a favourite for indie and up and coming bands. Regulars there had been Hard Rain, Then Jericho, Three And A Half Minutes, not to mention, unknown Scottish smilies, Wet Wet Wet. Some, who got to see the B.As always commented on their live performances, noting them as born gig masters. After all, not all bands could boast their own Polish dancer in the shape of Wojtek Dmochowski.

It has undoubtedly crossed the minds of some of you when we say we must still remark on the history of The Blue Aeroplanes when they seemed to have achieved so little. One is for sure, they have remained true to themselves - never faltering in any shape or form, always pleasing to the eye and enjoyable to listen to. They take you back in time to a place in music history where bands were made up of young people who actually played instruments. Any band of that time, composed, rehearsed and performed over and over again to get it right. They worked hard, sweated and were devoted to their craft. Unlike today when a band is only made up of people who can just about sing and who couldnt compose a tune and lyric if their lives depended on it. This, I think it why, we should still celebrate bands like The Blue Aeroplanes for their determination and continuous contribution to British music. Whether it was experimental with different musicians and arrangements of sounds laced together with synths and percussions or taking the dive into all that was the bitter, edginess of the birth of indie, they have gathered up the growing trends into their arms and come with their own style of sound. They came back with gusto in 2000 with the album, Cavaliers/Roundheads, and now, just this year, 2006, we see the release of a long awaited, two CD set of a remaster of the 1990 album, Swagger, probably their most rewarding and well received album of the Nineties. This re working contains 14 bonus tracks and goes, unmistakeably as, Swagger Deluxe. The B.As are back, still standing strong and still eagerly eclipsing new sounds with traditional B.A rhythms and techniques.

We feel as if we know them know, but exactly where, when, how and why the band formed originally and who gelled with who is not entirely known. Their initial birth seems to be a mystery, and perhaps only known by Bristol residents and those who knew them, so it is with this, that they remain intriguing and their records, desirable. These ordinary student, type guys, who are now in their forties, still capture a moment in time when music was still exciting and new; when records were still bought in Woolies on vinyl and singles were only 45s for 45 pence. As far as The Blue Aeroplanes themselves go, all we know is that in Bristol and also in certain places of the Globe, this band still take a secret pride of place in the musical Hall of Fame.

An electric guitar can have any number of a range of extra features, accessories and gadgets used to adjust, distort and affect the sound that it produces. But one item is an absolute necessity: no electric guitar can be performed or make any decent sound without an amplifier. A good quality amplifier can make a huge difference, and if you are looking to buy an electric guitar, or perhaps move on from a basic starter model, then a good quality and flexible amplifier unit to match the guitar will make all the difference. After all, it is the guitar which produces the signal, but the amplifier which makes the sound. It would be the same as considering a choir and the conductor. Both are important, but no matter how good the conductor, it is the choir which ultimately make the sound, and have the greatest impact on the eventual quality of sound heard.

Amplifiers that were created specifically for an instrument were first developed as part of the electric guitar development, and it was these instruments which first benefited from any kind of external amplification. These early units were developed in the 1930s, and it was the advent of more advanced electrics that enabled amplification units to be built that were both economic and of good quality. Of course, the amplification of guitars had been around for much longer, but simply for acoustic guitars, with microphones set up. The combination of electronic amplification units coupled to electric guitars gave rise to a whole new sound of music, originally popularised by the steel stung sound of the Hawaiian guitar.

Early amplifiers were fairly basic, and although they often had a range of controls, these didn't provide a wide range of controls to improve sound quality. Generally the early amplifiers were very good at boosting the treble signal, but the bass notes were poor, and the response was slow. As these early models developed, extra features were included such as reverberation effects and tremolo units.

In fact, Fender introduced an amplification unit which included a tremolo effect, although through an error of misunderstanding this was labelled as 'vibrato', with the lever included on the Stratocaster guitar which actually produced the vibrato effect labelled as 'tremolo'. These incorrect labels stuck, however, and today the most popular way of referring to the tremolo effect is through the word vibrato, and the vibrato effect is usually referred to as tremolo. This is why music written for electric guitar has these words used quite differently from music written for other instruments.

Many of these earlier models of amplifier could be reasonably easily overloaded, and some guitarists took to deliberately achieving this effect, creating a range of distortion effects. Indeed, it was Dave Davies, guitarist with the Kinks who first introduced a distortion effect which involved him connecting the output from one of his amplifiers into the input section of a second amplifier. This distortion effect created a unique, wailing sound, and was one which, whilst the designers at the time could never have imagined, was later introduced by many other performers and amplifier designers. Distortion effects today are so prevalent that it almost seems a requirement that a guitarist can produce such a sound within many genres of music.

With so many choices of guitars on the market, it can be an overwhelming task to pick the right one. Guitars essentially can be broken down into two main, broad categories: electric and acoustic. Acoustic guitars require no amplification and typically are the guitar of choice for many beginning guitarists. Acoustic guitars are a good choice for those learning basic open chords or simple strumming patterns. An acoustic guitar can have steel or nylon strings that are typically much heavier in gauge to those found on an electric guitar. This can make bending strings or playing solo's more challenging until finger strength and stamina are developed. Given the increasing popularity of county, pop, rock, and metal musical styles, many beginning guitarist are opting to buy electric guitars.

This then allows them to focus on learning to play their favorite musical style straight out of the gate. Electric guitars allow for more versatility and excitement due to their pickup configurations and ability to add distortion, reverb, and other effects to its amplified sound. Electric guitars then are increasing becoming the guitar of choice for many beginning guitarists. However, the question still remains, which guitar should a beginner buy? This is a difficult question given the number of quality guitars on the market. However, one of the common mistakes a beginner makes is buying an inexpressive and low-quality guitar. These guitars are often difficult to play, sound thin, and are not built to last. Furthermore, they end up costing more in the long run as one is forced to upgrade as skills increase. This then leaves the person with a low quality used guitar that is difficult sell (this is because inexpensive, low-quality guitars lose their value very quickly). A better, and more cost effective approach then would be to buy a mid-level guitar that holds its value. This adds built in value protection if one ever decides to sell.

The famous Fender Stratocaster, or, Strat for short, is popular guitar for the beginning, intermediate, and advanced player. Its straight-ahead design, durability, versatility, and playability, makes it a perfect guitar for all music styles. Made famous by Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Stratocaster comes in a variety of configurations and price points for almost every budget. Mid-level Stratocasters range in price from $400-600 depending on where it is made (i.e. America, Mexico, Japan). Buying a used Fender Stratocaster is also an option as Fender guitars are known to sound and play better with age. This is one of the reasons for the increasing popularity of Fender vintage series guitars, such as the Fender Stratocaster 60's reissue and Fender Relic guitars.

The Fender Highway-One series is also a popular choice amongst beginning and intermediate guitarists as it is American made with the playability and tone of a vintage guitar. In summary, those just starting to play guitar are forced with a difficult decision when buying their first guitar. Electric guitars are increasing in popularity especially amongst novice guitarists as they allow for versatility and playability. Many, however, make the mistake of buying an inexpensive, poorly sounding and playing guitar. This then decreases motivation and desire to learn guitar and well and being a poor financial investment. The Fender Stratocaster is a quintessential guitar and one well suited for guitars of all levels that holds its value. There are many Stratocasters to choose from, so do your research and you're sure to find the perfect Fender guitar and in doing so own a piece of music history.

Not sure what's happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Love, Angel, Music, Baby gets. Love, Angel, Music, Baby simply stated is one of Gwen Stefani's best CDs to date.

Gwen Stefani has been a super star in the Pop genre for quite a while now and Love, Angel, Music, Baby is an excellent illustration as to why.

The fame of karaoke all over the world is phenomenal but its origin has never been uttered. Nowadays, karaoke bars are becoming more popular in various countries. As a matter of fact, most restaurants offer machines with songs in different languages for free. Nevertheless, the mere thought of going to karaoke bars often raise some eyebrows. On the other hand, those who complained but gave it a chance, it has been hard for them to withdraw themselves from the fun it gives.

Where does this well-known form of entertainment really come from? Although the exact story of the emergence of it is vague, we can still track its etymology. The word 'karaoke' comes from 'kara', empty (short for karappo) and 'oke' (short for okesutora), orchestra. As known, karaoke tracks only have music accompaniment. The vocals are provided by a "singer", amateur or not, who holds a microphone and sings while following the words displayed on a screen or in a book.

With the evolution of technology, karaoke has been brought to every home. Its first real technological advancement is the development of home sets that allows you to sing at anytime. There were also karaoke tapes that have been made available to the public. Then, the birth of compact disc made it even exciting as it offers hundreds of songs in just one disc. These music paraphernalia comes with a lyric book and can be played with or without vocals.

Going back to its roots, the congestion of Japanese neighborhood have become a major problem in setting up karaoke sets. With houses built closely to one another, many complained about too much sound coming from other houses. And so, entrepreneurs took advantage of this issue and created the soundproof karaoke boxes. The box is a converted freight car with closed-door insulated rooms and soundproof. This is marketed as a venue where one can sing so loudly without creating inconvenience to other people. The first karaoke box was developed in 1984 in a rice field in the countryside of Okayama Prefecture. Sooner, Karaoke Boxes became popular and were put up in open spaces in both rural and urban areas.

Time flies and we're now embracing the continuous development of portable Karaoke Microphones. This sound device has a built-in program and a chip that houses thousands of songs. And because it is portable, playing it anywhere you want is possible as long as there is a television.

If you really want to learn how to play guitar you can find a way. With all of the guitar playing information out there it is much easier to learn to play today than it was years ago. Although private lessons are a great method of learning to play guitar it is not the only learning method out there. Even an absolute beginner guitar player can learn how to play with all of the options available to you today.

If you put forth the effort you can teach yourself all of those cool tunes you would love to know how to play. One good way to learn how to pick is to find an online lesson source. There are many websites online that can teach you both absolute beginner guitar and advanced lessons. Many of these sites are free while others charge a fee. There are tons of great players out there that have never had a formal lesson in their life.

If you are new at playing the guitar you should probably start with some simple method that is designed for the beginning guitarist. Learning how to read guitar tablature and teaching yourself a few simple chords along with some strum patterns would be a good start. With this humble beginning you should be on your way to learning how to play the guitar. Before you know it you will be playing your own style of music.

One way some people learn to play is by ear. This involves listing to the song you want to learn and trying to copy the sound you hear. It may be a little while before you can use this method but it is the best way to find your own voice and play the guitar in a way that only you can do.

Playing music with other people will take your playing to new levels. There is something about playing with your buddies that makes you a better player. All of those bad habits you tend to develop will go away if you spend enough time playing with other people.

At some point you will realize that you must put in the time if you want to be a great guitar player. You can buy the next great method as many times as you like but it may not make you a better player. You must practice if you want to be a good guitar player. As you teach yourself it is important to stay motivated. As you get to be a better player you will move into advanced topics that you may not be able to master in a day. You need to spend the time it takes to do things right without losing interest. Sometimes this is a tough thing to do.

If you take the time to do things right you will have a hobby that you can enjoy for the rest of your life. Anything worth doing is worth taking the time to get it right. With enough time and effort you will soon be playing guitar like a pro even if you are an absolute beginner guitar player today.

Pink Floyd: The Black Strat: A History of David Gilmour's Black Fender Stratocaster

The Black Strat book is the first and only accurate and knowledgeable account of David Gilmour's favorite Stratocaster guitar. Written by Phil Taylor - David's personal guitar technician since 1974 - to coincide with the release of the long awaited and much requested Fender 'David Gilmour Signature Strat': an instrument replicating the look, set-up, sound and feel of David's famous black guitar as it is today. The chronological story begins with David Gilmour joining Pink Floyd in early 1968, his guitar at that time, his subsequent instruments leading to the purchase of the Black Strat in 1970, and the other guitars that have come and gone. The book details all of the changes and modifications made to the Black Strat, its use on Pink Floyd tours and iconic albums, David's solo projects, and various guest appearances throughout the years.
Customer Review: Pink Floyd: The Black Strat A history of David Gilmour's Black Fender Stratocaster
After reading this book in one sitting, it became an inspiration for me to build my own Gilmour black strat. It is a must for any fan of Pink Floyd as well as David Gilmour fan. A very detailed history of the guitar and it's owner and the various changes the guitar went through 'til it reached its current state. A wealth of pictures as well as info, so much as i said that i built my own gilmour strat. The only changes i made were in the neck, it is a C-shaped but a bit smaller to fit my hand, i did put a duncan ssl5 in the bridge, but instead of the fat 50's in the neck and 69 in the middle, i put 2 duncan ssl-3 in the neck and middle but the middle pickup is reverse wound, and instead of drilling a hole in the pickguard for the extra switch to turn on the neck pickup, i used a push-pull pot on the lower tone control to add the neck pickup. I decided to do the N.O.S version instead of the relic'd version. See if this book had that kind of inspiration for me, imagine what it may do for you. Go out and get it, enjoy yourself reading it, even if you don't build guitars.
Customer Review: David Gilmour's Black Strat-GRN
I, at first, scoffed at this story of David Gilmour's Black Strat; however, the more I thought about it, the more I believed that it would offer something of a storied journey. This proved to be a good historical read and journey of not only David and Phil Taylor, Daivid's Guitar Technician, but also of the journey of the Black Strat and several other Floydian Guitars. I am glad that I purchased and read this account.

When recording, mixing down, and mastering, we always come across those 3 different EQ options. Many ask, what is the difference between them and which one should I use. here is a little information to help you get started.

The one most of you will be familiar with is the Graphic EQ as shown in the example below. The faders are arranged from low to high frequency. The are set to a specific frequency. The graphic EQ is most often used to control feedback or to get the sound you want out of an instrument. In a recording environment, once the feedback is taken out of the room, the settings usually stay put.

Parametric EQ you will find to be very different from the Graphic EQ. They permit you to choose exactly which frequency you want via the Frequency setting and the Q control. A wide Q will center your frequency around a broad group of frequencies which will all be affected. It is a very broad adjustment. A narrow Q will only affect the frequencies within the narrow Q.

You can also set the Q to affect one sole frequency. This works well if you have a single frequency affecting your mix. You can easily isolate it and adjust accordingly. Software such as Cakewalk Sonar 6 Producer comes equipped with its own internal software version of all the varying types of EQ's in this article.

Paragraphic EQ is similar to the parametric EQ in that you can chunk out areas of frequency, but it does not give you the Q. It is a nice medium between a Graphics EQ and a Parametric EQ. It is very applicable for live sound, but we are seeing more and more studios putting the Paragraphic EQ to work.

I hope this helps to understand the differences, similarities and applications of these different types of available EQs.

One guitarist, who has been playing for about thirty years
and has used a myriad number of guitars, loves his Fender
62 reissue Telecaster, which he bought in the UK. Designed
in 1983, this Fender 62 reissue Telecaster is a very
different color of cherry grain and lighter than a Les
Paul, which he likes.

As a guitarist who dabbles in country, rock and roll and
even blues, he appreciates that the Fender 62 reissue
Telecaster is a great instrument for all three. When
playing country music he uses the pickup of the bridge; for
blues the neck pickup. A Roland processor and two twins
operating in stereo is how he started out using his Fender
62 Telecaster, but lately he employs an Ibanez compressor
with a Fender Hot Rod, 40 watt, and straight out of the
amplifier.

The only negative thing this experienced guitarist has to
say about his classic Fender 62 is that the factory vintage
tuners make it difficult to change strings very quickly.

The 62 reissue Telecaster earned a ten (out of 10) for
reliability and durability from this reviewer. He has never
had to call on customer service for any repair or support.

This accomplished musician calls his Fender 62 Telecaster
the best musical investment he has ever made.

Another guitarist, who has owned his 62 reissue Telecaster
for twenty years, said the same thing about reliability. He
has just never had a problem with it and is interested in
finding out just how long it's going to last. While he says
it's the Jeep and not the Ferrari of guitars he truly loves
the sound and action of this instrument. One negative note
from this reviewer - the strings break often.

Fender 1/6 Scale Mini Stratocaster

The legendary and venerable Fender Stratocaster guitar took guitar design to a higher level and became the voice of rock n roll. Featuring a comfort-contoured body, three single-coil pickups, and a synchronized tremolo system the Strat guitar has become the most popular guitar ever built. This 1/6 scale model guitar comes packaged on a blister card with many accessories including 3 mini picks, strap, shield, transmitter and guitar stand. (NOT PLAYABLE - For DISPLAY ONLY)
Customer Review: Mini Strat
I play a Stratocaster as my main guitar, and I even prefer it over my Les Paul, so I was intriguigued by a miniature Strat. I was expecting something similar to a Strat, but when I got it I was totally jazzed. The detail is unreal. They had gone to great effort to make everything exactly like the real one. It even has a pack of three picks. One thing is put it in a safe place to display it because in making the details in scale it is very delicate. I'm very careful not to damage it because it is a prize display I show to everyone who comes to my house. If you like guitars and unique detailed collectibles check it out. You'll love it. I do.

I really love improvisations that go nowhere. Improvisations where there is no goal just an impulse to follow feelings in the current moment.

In fact, some have described this kind of music as self-indulgent - a kind of musical fantasy world where the focus is more on the performer than the listener.

Of course, this isn't the case at all. You see, most of us are used to having our music wrapped up in nice neat little packages. We aren't used to actually listening to music. We expect an "emotional experience" right away. And it better happen in 3-4 minutes or else.

Take Japanese Shakahuachi music for example. For those of you who don't know, the shakahuachi is a Japanese flute. It's beautiful sound is appreciated by many in the East.

I have a few CDs of this music and everytime I listen to them I hear something new. It's as if each time the CD is played I hear it for the first time. It never gets old. Why? Because of the absence of musical form!

There is not much for the mind to grasp or hold onto. Repetition of musical phrases is almost non existent. Instead, we get music without goals!

If there is a goal at all, it's that the person performing the music remains in the present while playing. What we hear is the "state of mind" of the performer at the exact time the recording is made.

In one of my own piano pieces "Cirrus," (listen to it at http://www.quiescencemusic.com) I do the same thing. And everytime I listen to it, it seems that it's somehow changed. Yet the music always remains fresh and pliant - waiting to be discovered again and again.

Having said all of this, I have nothing against musical form and the works that come from it. I just think the "other" kind of music is just as valid and important

Stevie Ray Vaughan hailed from Dallas Texas, and his name is synonymous with fender electric guitars. Stevie predominantly played a late fifties or early sixties version of the Strat (opinion is divided on its exact date), but there is no doubting that it was a Fender Stratocaster (Strat) guitar. Stevie seemed to favour this guitar over most others, and the sound is distinctly Fender, and Strat in particular, in quality.

The sound produced by Stevie Ray is almost classic Fender. The Strat is very distinctive, and adds a beautiful tone, especially to Stevie Ray's blues playing. There is a lot of recorded music by Stevie Ray, and all of it is great to hear. I certainly recommend that you seek some out and enjoy the Texas blues at its very best.

Stevie's background was steeped in the blues, so it is no surprise that his recordings feature many blues cuts. The video of Stevies' performance of Texas Flood is a great example of his feel for the blues. Stevie didn't stop with the blues though, and he used his Fender Guitar to great effect on many of his own compositions, as well as blues classics. He played a kind of shuffle exquisitely, as demonstrated on brilliant tunes such as 'Pride and Joy' and 'Cold Shot'. SRV also covered many rock classics, and could do anything song he turned his attention to justice.

I had the great privilege of seeing Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble at the Hammersmith Odeon (it's now called something else I think) in London, in the late 1980's. Apart from the pleasure of seeing SRV play, the event was doubly memorable for me because Eric Clapton came in, accompanied by Ringo Starr and other halves, and sat down in front of me! How cool was that.

Stevie wrapped his Fender around all his classic cuts, including some specialty rocks songs that he covered, in honour of his peers. I am thinking here of Jimi Hendrix, for whom SRV covered Little Wing and Voodoo Chile. And Stevie's renditions of these songs were spectacular. However, remembering Eric Clapton, reminded me of another SRV cover, which I recall EC getting very animated about, And that was a version of Stevie Wonder's classic song 'Superstition', played with all the panache you would expect from a super showman like Stevie Ray Vaughan. And if Eric Clapton loved it, who am I to argue?

I am very grateful to the likes of Google's You Tube that allows us to see late great artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan plying their trade. Seeing these great performers, many on stage where they were in their element. is a chance to see great workmen use their tools of trade, which in Stevie Ray's case, was a Fender Electric Guitar!

Fender electric guitars rock! Stevie Ray Vaughan played them, so could you! Great music, great guitars, great time!

Through the history of music and guitars, there are bits and pieces of interesting information that all fans enjoy knowing about. There is no single listing of this, so here is a compilation of some fun facts about electric guitars:

Fun Facts

From June 29 to July 9, 2006, the M & I Bank paid a tribute to rock'n'roll' and Summerfest which is the World's Largest Music Festival. Two 18-story electric guitars located on two sides of M&I Bank's headquarters lit up the Milwaukee skyline.

In a wedding ceremony in London in 2001, Guitar fan Chris Black married his Stratocaster.

Jimi Hendrix's tombstone has a Fender Stratocaster carved on it.

The world's smallest guitar is 10 micrometers long with strings 50 nanometers (100 atoms) wide.

It is said that Les Paul, soon after prototyping the electric guitar that made him famous, got really drunk one night and made an electric banjo that strangely did not earn him as much recognition as his previous efforts.

Another Les Paul fun fact - Les Paul had a car accident in 1948 and asked the doctor to set his arm permanently in a guitar-playing position.

A Gibson solid body with no serial number is a 1952. Gibson didn't use any serial number in 1952.

Epiphone, originally a Greek violin company, made banjos from 1923 and in the 1930's switched to guitars. Epiphone was the only banjo company to successfully switch to guitar production.

Leo Fender was a saxophonist, not a guitarist; the current head of the Corporation is also a saxophonist!

To test the strength and durability of guitar necks, in 1950, Leo Fender balanced the guitar neck between two chairs and stood on it.

Fender uses alder, not the more usual ash for guitars. Alder trees don't grow large enough to make guitars anywhere except Oregon, within an area only 200 miles by 50 miles.

In a peak year Fender makes over a quarter of a million guitars. They are the largest manufacturer of electric guitars in the world. Fender also makes banjos, mandolins and violins.

The Fender factory makes around 90,000 strings per day. This is over 20,000 miles a year, enough to circle the world. They also make around 950 guitar necks a day!

The Telecaster was originally called the Broadcaster but this clashed with a drum kit of the same name. While the new name was considered, Fender produced guitars with no name on the headstock, and these "Nocasters" are collector's items.

The highest price paid for an electric guitar at auction, was $959,500 at Christie's in July 2004 for Eric Clapton's 'Blackie' Stratocaster. The previous record was for Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia's custom-made 'Tiger' - $957,500 in 2002.

To design the Experience Music Project/SciFi Museum at Seattle Center, Frank O. Gehry went straight to the source of rock 'n roll: the guitar. He bought a couple of electric guitars, cut them up and used the pieces for an early design model. The final design still carries the bright reds and blues of those guitar pieces.

Fender Stratocaster Guitar Belt

If you love to rock out to Fender instruments then this is the belt for you. The Fender Stratocaster Guitar Belt features a 2" leather belt with a cast pewter Fender Stratocaster-shaped belt buckle that measures 5" across and 1.5" tall.

Perhaps no other guitar maker has touched the hearts of so many players and collectors as Fender. By producing excellent guitars at reasonable prices, Fender has been the instrument of choice for many guitarists throughout the world. Both the famous and not so famous have relied on Fender guitars to define their signature sounds.

The Fender company was founded by Leo Fender, and produced its first solid body electric guitar in 1951. This guitar was called the Telecaster, and was soon followed by the Precision Bass, and the legendary Stratocaster in 1954. Over the years many changes would take place at Fender which had a great impact on the types and quality of instruments they produced.

The first "mile-stone" year for Fender came in 1965. During this year, Fender was bought by corporate giant CBS. Quality began to decline during CBS's reign, and although Fender still remained popular among players, CBS lacked the commitment and understanding necessary to satisfy the needs of serious musicians. As a result, the guitars produced during the "Pre-CBS" era would become prized collectors items demanding large sums of money in the vintage guitar market.

In 1985 Fender enjoyed another "mile-stone" year as a group of employees purchased the company back from CBS. For the first time in 20 years Fender was in the hands of musicians and artisans committed to producing world class guitars. A new manufacturing facility was built in Corona California to handle the production of USA made guitars. In 1987 the Fender Custom Shop was established, reaffirming the company's dedication to producing top quality guitars, and catering to the needs of top musicians.

From 1985 to the present day, Fender has been steadily expanding its operations within the United States and abroad. The company now produces a vast array of musical products from strings to mixing boards. In spight of such massive growth, Fender's commitment to the production of quality guitars remains very high. Fender remains one of the few companies that can successfully provide quality products to both the "budget conscious" and "price no object" musicians.

Makes You Wanna Play Multi Guitars Toddler and Youth Kids Tee Shirt in 5 Colors

Every guitar player has a certain guitar they dream about owning. Whether it's a Gibson Black Beauty or a 1961 Stratocaster. However, the problem of finance often gets in the way. One solution to this problem is to buy a damaged guitar and work on restoring it. As well as being a way to get your hands on your dream guitar at a reasonable price, it is also a very satisfying project to undertake.

This article will give you a few pointers on how to get started.

Locating Spare Parts

This used to be the hardest part of restoring a guitar. Before the web, you had to get very lucky in order to find the right parts. Nowadays, a quick search on Google will often turn up exactly the part you need. It doesn't matter how obscure it is - there's a good chance someone, somewhere will be selling it.

Repairing the Body

The body of the guitar often gets chipped and scratched over time. You may want to strip the original finish off the guitar an refinish it. Don't. The finish itself is valuable. The big guitar makers go to great lengths to perfect their finishes. It's unlikely you'll be able to reach the same quality as the original. A guitar with the original finish, even scratched and chipped, is worth more than a refinished guitar.

Repairing The Neck

It is possible to fix a guitar neck that is cracked and warped. Guitar necks often start to crack at the where the headstock meets the neck. One quick solution is to pour hot glue into the crack. However, this is not the best long term solution. Breaking off the headstock altogether, although very nerve-wracking, does allow you to ensure that the glue fully gets into the crack and the problem will not reoccur.

The neck will usually be the dirtiest part of the guitar. Give it a good clean with a toothbrush and wood cleaner. Allowing it to soak in boiling linseed oil will really add a shine to the neck.

Other Parts

Again, you may be tempted to replace worn knobs, frets, tuning pegs etc. with new ones. It is not always advisable to do this. If you are able to restore the originals to reasonable condition - do this. If not - try to replace them with parts from the same make and model of guitar from the same era.

Adding Parts

When restoring an old guitar, some people are tempted to customize it with new features e.g. a whammy bar. How advisable this is depends on why you are restoring the guitar. If you are restoring it solely for your own enjoyment - then go for it. If you intend to sell it at any point, making modifications will reduce the value of the guitar.

Restoring a classic guitar is a very rewarding pursuit. I hope this article has set you off on the right foot.
